The Gran Vía has been one of the most transcendental works in Spain, more than 300 houses had to be demolished and it affected almost 50 streets. Thanks to the Gran Vía, better communication was achieved between the center of Madrid (Calle Alcalá) and the northwest of the city (Plaza de España). Because the project had to respect three religious buildings -the Caballero de Gracia Oratory, the church of San José and the now disappeared church of San Francisco de Borja-, the layout of the avenue ended up being more irregular than planned. The result is a magnificent set of buildings that includes some as emblematic as the Metrópolis, the Telefónica building, the Casino, the Capitol Building and the Callao cinema.
It begins in Alcalá Street and ends at Plaza de España. It is an important landmark in the city since its construction in the early twentieth century seen from the commercial, tourist and leisure point of view. In this last aspect is famous for its cinemas, although in recent years some of them have closed, others have been converted with great success to musical theater, so the stretch between the Plaza de Callao and Spain is known as the Broadway Madrid. The stretch between the San Luis network and the Plaza de Callao is now home to numerous stores of international fashion chains.
